Quick answer: There is no reliable answer to which is the rarest cubensis strain, because nobody counts how many syringes or cultures of each strain exist. What can be documented is which strains are uncommon for a reason: an unusual trait, a single breeder’s recent release, or a history so thin that few sources cover it at all. Seven strains that fit those tests are Golden Halo, Full Metal Ghost, TAT Ghost, Avalanche, Makilla Gorilla, Lucid Gates and Hillbilly Pumpkin.
Spores are legal to buy for microscopy in 46 states. Germinating them is not, which is why nothing on this page is about cultivation.
Looking for spore syringes?
We ship Psilocybe cubensis spore syringes the same business day. Each syringe is a 10 cc syringe. Orders over $100 ship free, and our spore syringe packs save you up to 40%.
Intended use. Our spore syringes are sold for microscopy, taxonomy and educational use only. This guide covers the history, lineage and visible traits of seven less common strains. “Rare” here means uncommon in circulation or unusual in some visible way. It never refers to effects or potency, and this guide does not cover cultivation, effects or dosing.

Is there a rarest cubensis strain?
Not in any measurable sense. Every strain in this guide is Psilocybe cubensis, and strain names are informal labels with no registry behind them. A 2025 review in the Journal of Fungi noted that nearly everything known about named cubensis strains comes from community reports rather than academic study. No one tracks how many prints, syringes or cultures of a given strain exist, so any single answer is a guess.
Instead of naming a single rarest cubensis strain, we used three tests. A strain made this list if it has a trait that is unusual in the species, if it traces to a single breeder’s recent release, or if so little is documented about it that only a handful of sources mention it. We looked for at least two separate sources for every history detail below, and we say so where we could not find them or where sources disagree.
One pattern stands out. Four of the seven are reported to descend from just three lines: True Albino Teacher, Albino Penis Envy and Melmac, the Penis Envy line that Penis Envy’s developer, Rich Gee, says he isolated himself. Among newer names, the same few parent lines come up again and again. That fits a 2023 genome study in Current Biology, which found that cultivated cubensis strains descend from very few founders and are highly inbred.
1. Golden Halo
Golden Halo is on this list for its spore print. Most cubensis prints are dark purple-brown. Golden Halo’s was described as golden in the original accounts, and lines sold today are reported to range from golden to light rust to reddish brown. The most repeated origin story says it was collected near Kingston, Jamaica, but DoubleBlind and a second strain guide give different names for the collector and different years (2012 and 2015), and that second guide doubts the story altogether. The caps are gold with a darker center and a lighter rim, on long, slender white stems. Our Golden Halo guide covers the story in full.
2. Full Metal Ghost
Full Metal Ghost, often called FMG, is a single breeder’s release. A hobbyist’s TikTok video from May 2023 called it the newest release from the breeder Mycotrophic, and a High Times feature in February 2024 credited the genetics to Mycotrophic as well. The breeder has not published its parents, and we found the parent pair that circulates online in only one independent source, so we leave it out. No reliable description of its spore color exists. Our Full Metal Ghost guide sets out what is and is not known.
3. TAT Ghost
TAT Ghost, often just called Ghost, is an albino selection from True Albino Teacher. According to the forum record, a hobbyist known as Jik Fibs noticed pure-white mutants among his Golden Teacher around 2017 and selected them into a stable all-white line whose spores he described as translucent. Ghost and Yeti are two of his own selections from that line, and a separate breeder’s strain guide also describes Ghost as an isolation of True Albino Teacher. Our Jack Frost guide explains the True Albino Teacher family tree.
4. Avalanche
Avalanche is a cross of Yeti and Melmac. Shroomok, a community strain database, and a breeder’s published strain guide both give that parentage. Yeti is the other Jik Fibs selection from True Albino Teacher, so Avalanche combines an albino Golden Teacher descendant with a Penis Envy line. We found no agreed date for the cross, and no second source for the breeder credit, so we are leaving both out. Nobody has published a careful description of its spore color either.
5. Makilla Gorilla
Makilla Gorilla is a cross of Albino Penis Envy and a Melmac line sold as DC Melmac. Shroomok and a breeder’s strain guide agree on that parentage, and a genetics listing from the same breeder puts it simply as “a cross of Ape and Melmac.” The breeder credit for the original cross comes from a single source, so we are not repeating it. Both parents come from the Penis Envy family, one albino and one pigmented, which makes Makilla Gorilla a useful comparison for anyone studying how albinism carries through Penis Envy crosses.
6. Lucid Gates
Lucid Gates is on this list because its own lineage is disputed. Shroomok describes it as a cross of Pearly Gates, itself a True Albino Teacher × Melmac cross, with Melmac. A seller’s strain page gives a different pair entirely, Golden Teacher and Enigma. Both can’t be right, and we found nothing from a breeder that settles it. That kind of conflict is common with newer names, and it is a good reason to treat any single lineage claim with care.
7. Hillbilly Pumpkin
Hillbilly Pumpkin is a selection from Hillbilly, a strain that several sources trace to Arkansas, with two of them dating it to the 1990s. The Pumpkin line is described as a mutation or offshoot of Hillbilly, named for mushrooms with a pumpkin-like look. Accounts disagree on who isolated it and on its color, which one source calls orange and another light caramel to golden brown. Fewer sources cover it than cover its parent, Hillbilly, and they do not agree on its full story.
The seven strains at a glance
| Strain | Reported lineage | Why it is uncommon |
|---|---|---|
| Golden Halo | Said to be a wild Jamaican collection; disputed | Golden to rust spore print |
| Full Metal Ghost | Not published or confirmed | One breeder’s release, in circulation by 2023 |
| TAT Ghost | Selection from True Albino Teacher | Albino line from a parent with translucent spores |
| Avalanche | Yeti × Melmac | Recent cross, little documentation |
| Makilla Gorilla | Albino Penis Envy × DC Melmac | Recent cross, little documentation |
| Lucid Gates | Disputed: Pearly Gates × Melmac, or Golden Teacher × Enigma | Recent, with conflicting records |
| Hillbilly Pumpkin | Selected form of Hillbilly (Arkansas) | Single selected form of an older strain |
Under a light microscope, the pigmented strains here look like any other cubensis: smooth, subellipsoid spores about 11–17 by 7–11 micrometers, purple-brown one at a time. The albino and pale lines keep the same shape and size with far less color. Our guide to albino and leucistic mushrooms explains the difference, and our cubensis strains list covers every strain we carry.
Legal status
Spores of every strain in this guide contain no psilocybin or psilocin, so under federal law and the law of 46 states they are not a controlled substance; the DEA confirmed the federal position in writing in January 2024. California and Florida restrict spores, Georgia and Idaho ban them, and we do not ship Psilocybe spores to those four states. Germinating spores is illegal under federal law everywhere. Our state-by-state legal guide has every statute.
Frequently asked questions
What is the rarest cubensis strain?
No one can say for certain, because nobody tracks how much of each strain exists. Strains with an unusual trait, such as Golden Halo’s light spore print, or with a single breeder behind them, such as Full Metal Ghost, are good examples of uncommon strains.
Does rare mean better?
No. Rare only means uncommon in circulation or unusual in some visible trait. All of these strains are the same species as Golden Teacher, and a 2023 genome study found that cultivated cubensis strains are closely related to one another.
Why do sources disagree about rare strains?
Most strain history comes from breeders, sellers and forum posts rather than from published research. Newer strains have fewer sources, so a single mistake or a sales claim can spread before anyone checks it.
Can you tell rare strains apart under a microscope?
Usually not by shape or size, since all cubensis spores are about 11–17 by 7–11 micrometers. Color is the exception: albino lines show pale spores, and Golden Halo is described as producing lighter spores than usual.
Are rare cubensis spores legal?
The law treats every strain the same. Spores are legal for microscopy in 46 states and not in California, Florida, Georgia or Idaho, where we do not ship.
Do you sell these strains?
Yes. All seven are sold as 10 cc spore syringes, each with a sterile needle and a 30-day warranty, for microscopy and taxonomy use only. You can find them in our spore syringe catalog.
