Mazatapec is a Psilocybe cubensis variety originating from the Mazatec region of Oaxaca, Mexico, where Mazatec indigenous communities have used psilocybin mushrooms ceremonially for centuries. The name is a recognized misspelling of “Mazatec,” and the line was among the earliest cubensis specimens introduced to Western mycology following R. Gordon Wasson’s 1957 Life Magazine documentation of María Sabina’s ceremonies. Distinguished by caramel-brown caps, long slender stems, and dark purple prints. A foundational landrace specimen.
