How we counted
This list comes from our own order records. We counted every single-strain spore syringe sold between January 1 and September 26, 2026, and ranked the strains by how many syringes of each were ordered. We publish the ranks only, not unit counts or sales figures.
Three kinds of orders are left out. The Mystery Spore Syringe is excluded because the buyer does not choose the strain. Picks inside variety packs are excluded because our records do not count pack picks by strain. Kits and supplies are excluded too, including the Beginner’s Starter Kit, whose five strains are fixed. If variety-pack picks could be counted, the order might look different.
This is one store’s customers over nine months, so read it as a snapshot of our orders rather than a survey of the whole hobby.

Every strain on this list is the same species, Psilocybe cubensis. Strain names mark lines that hobbyists keep separate because of a consistent look, and most of what is known about them comes from community accounts rather than published research. The notes below say where a history is well supported and where it is not.
1. Golden Teacher
Golden Teacher has been in circulation since the 1980s and is the reference strain that most others are compared against. The most repeated account says it was found in subtropical Florida, but no collector, date or specimen has been documented. Its name comes from its golden to amber cap, which is usually darker at the center than at the edge.

2. Albino Penis Envy
Albino Penis Envy, usually shortened to APE, is the albino member of the Penis Envy family. It is reported as a cross between Penis Envy and an older albino cubensis line called PF Albino. It keeps the Penis Envy shape, a thick stem under a small cap that stays mostly closed, in a white mushroom. Its spores carry little pigment and there are few of them, so an APE syringe can look nearly empty even when nothing is wrong with it.

3. Jedi Mind Fuck
Jedi Mind Fuck, or JMF, has a disputed origin. The most repeated story says a cultivator known as “Myco Joe” found it in the wild in Georgia in the 2000s, and another says it is a cross of Z-Strain and Golden Teacher. It has a golden-brown cap with a pronounced cone-shaped bump at the center. In 2025 the FDA cleared a clinical trial at the Scottsdale Research Institute in Arizona that uses whole mushrooms, and JMF is the strain the institute chose.

4. Penis Envy
Penis Envy traces to the 1970s, when a cultivator named Rich Gee selected it from spores that came from a collection in the Colombian Amazon. It is a mutant form, with a thick, dense stem and a small cap that barely opens. Because the cap stays close to the stem, the mushroom releases few spores, which is why Penis Envy syringes look thinner than most.

5. Blue Meanie
Blue Meanie is a cubensis line that community accounts trace to Australia. It is known for flesh that turns blue quickly wherever it is handled. The same name is used for Panaeolus cyanescens, a different species with black spores, which causes a lot of confusion online. The Blue Meanie we sell is the cubensis strain.

6. Stargazer
Stargazer has small caps that change from brown to golden to pale yellow as they mature, and it is usually photographed in dense clusters. Many product pages say it was found near Machu Picchu and that Paul Stamets and J.S. Chilton described it in The Mushroom Cultivator in 1983. The book does not mention it, and no evidence for the Peru story has ever been produced.

7. B+
Community accounts credit B+ to a cultivator known as Mr. G. He described it as a hybrid of Psilocybe cubensis and Psilocybe azurescens, but that claim has never been supported, and B+ is treated today as ordinary cubensis. It has large light-brown to caramel caps, often darker at the center, on long white stems.

8. Golden Halo
The most repeated account traces Golden Halo to a wild collection in Jamaica, though the collector and the year differ between tellings. Accounts of its spores disagree too. Several community accounts describe a gold to rust-colored spore print, which would be unusual for cubensis, while a 2024 DoubleBlind profile quoted the cultivator who says he collected it as saying he never released the original line, and reported that syringes sold under the name vary in spore color.

9. Albino Bluey Vuitton
Albino Bluey Vuitton is a white line of Bluey Vuitton, a reported cross of Panama and Melmac Penis Envy. Through Melmac, it belongs to the Penis Envy family. Accounts differ on who isolated the white line and on how much color its spores carry, so we do not treat either point as settled.

10. Casper
Casper is a pale strain with white to ivory mushrooms. Two breeder accounts describe it as a cross of Albino Penis Envy with a line called MakShak, while other write-ups agree only that APE is one parent. Its spore print is reported as dark purple-black, which makes it leucistic rather than truly albino.

What the ranking shows
The Penis Envy family is well represented. Albino Penis Envy is second and Penis Envy is fourth, and three more strains in the top twelve have Penis Envy or APE in their reported background: Albino Bluey Vuitton through Melmac, and Casper and Jack Frost through APE. That makes five of the twelve.
Pale strains are the other pattern. Albino Penis Envy, Albino Bluey Vuitton, Casper and Jack Frost are all white or near-white mushrooms, but they are not all the same kind of pale. The older pigmented strains still hold most of the top spots, with Golden Teacher, Jedi Mind Fuck, Blue Meanie, Stargazer and B+ all in the top seven. Legal status and where we ship
Psilocybe cubensis spores contain no psilocybin or psilocin, so federal law does not treat them as a controlled substance, and the DEA confirmed that position in a January 2024 letter. Germinating them is illegal. We ship to 46 states and do not ship to California, Florida, Georgia or Idaho, and buyers must be 18 or older. Our records do not break variety-pack picks down by strain, so we could not count them fairly. The Mystery Spore Syringe and kits are left out for similar reasons.

Why does an Albino Penis Envy syringe look almost empty?
