A spore syringe is a sterile 10 mL syringe containing mushroom spores suspended in sterile water. Spores are the microscopic reproductive cells of a mushroom, analogous to seeds in plants. Spore syringes are intended for microscopy and taxonomic study — researchers use them to examine spore morphology under a microscope, identify species, and document genetic variation.

The Spore Source sells spores strictly for microscopy, taxonomy, and research purposes. In most US states, mushroom spores are legal because the spores themselves do not contain controlled substances. California, Georgia, Idaho, and Florida have specific restrictions, and we do not ship restricted species to those states. A spore swab is a sterile cotton swab loaded with spores and sealed in a vial.

Yes — every spore syringe ships with a sterile needle. Needles are packed in the box with the syringes. Each syringe gets its own needle. If a needle is missing, contact us with your order number and we’ll send a replacement at no charge.

Store your spore syringes in the refrigerator (not the freezer) to maintain viability. When stored properly, spores can remain viable for several years. Liquid Cultures are good for up to 3 months in the refrigerator.

Freezing can adversely affect spore viability. If freezing occurs, contact our customer service team for guidance and a replacement under our 30-day warranty.

Spores are prepared in a controlled, sterile environment using lab-grade equipment and standard sterilization methods such as autoclaving. Every syringe is backed by our 30-day warranty.

Yes. All orders ship in plain, unmarked packaging with no branding visible on the exterior.
