Best Spore Syringes for Beginners (2026): 5 Classic Strains to Start With

Quick answer: The best spore syringes for beginners are classic Psilocybe cubensis strains with a documented history, a look you can recognize in photographs, and a place in most strain comparisons. Our five picks are Golden Teacher, Blue Meanie, Jedi Mind Fuck, Penis Envy and Leucistic A+. The list includes one mutant form, Penis Envy, which makes very few spores, and one pale mushroom, Leucistic A+, which still drops dark spores.

“Beginner” here means new to spore microscopy or collecting. Spores are legal to buy for microscopy in 46 states. Germinating them is not, which is why nothing on this page is about cultivation.

Intended use. Our Psilocybe cubensis spore syringes are sold for microscopy, taxonomy and educational use only. This guide is for people who are new to spore microscopy or to collecting spore syringes. It covers each strain’s history, what the mushroom looks like, and what its spores look like under a microscope. It does not cover cultivation, effects or dosing, and we do not answer questions about them.

What “beginner” means in this guide

On this site, a beginner is someone new to spore microscopy or to collecting spore syringes. It has nothing to do with growing mushrooms, which is illegal under federal law and which we do not support in any form. A beginner’s questions are practical ones: which strain names come up most often, what those names actually refer to, and what you can expect to see when a drop goes on a slide.

Every strain on this list is the same species. Psilocybe cubensis was first described from Cuba in 1906 by the American mycologist Franklin Sumner Earle, under the name Stropharia cubensis. A strain name marks a line that hobbyists have kept separate because it looks consistent. There is no official registry of strain names, and a 2025 review in the Journal of Fungi found that most of what is known about named strains comes from community reports rather than published research. That is why a good first strain is one whose history has been written down by more than one person.

How we chose the best spore syringes for beginners

We picked strains that pass three tests.

  • A documented history. More than one independent writer has described where the strain came from, even when parts of the story are disputed. For each strain we say which parts are solid and which are folklore.
  • A distinct look. The mushroom is easy to recognize in photographs, so you can connect the strain name to a real specimen.
  • A common reference. The name comes up again and again in strain comparisons, so knowing it first makes the rest of the catalog easier to follow.

One more point shaped the list. Under a light microscope, the spores of pigmented cubensis strains look alike: smooth, purple-brown ovals about 11 to 17 micrometers long. You cannot tell Golden Teacher from Jedi Mind Fuck by the spores alone. What differs between strains is the mushroom itself, and in some lines the amount or the color of the spores. That is why two of the five strains below are there for their spores: Penis Envy makes very few, and Leucistic A+ is a pale mushroom whose spores are still dark.

1. Golden Teacher

Golden Teacher is the reference strain for Psilocybe cubensis. It appeared in the American hobbyist scene in the 1980s, and the most repeated account says it was found in subtropical Florida. No collector, date or specimen has ever been documented, so the Florida story is tradition rather than record. “Golden” describes the cap, which is golden to amber and usually darker at the center than at the edge.

For a beginner, Golden Teacher is the baseline. Its spore print is the standard dark purple-brown, and most other strains are described by how they differ from it. It is also the strain our customers order most. Our Golden Teacher guide covers its history in detail, and the Golden Teacher spore syringe is where most collections start.

2. Blue Meanie

The Blue Meanie strain is a cubensis line that community accounts trace to Australia, where the species grows wild in pasture. No collector or date has been documented. The strain is known for its bruising: where the mushroom is handled, the flesh turns blue quickly and darkly.

The same name is also used for a different mushroom, Panaeolus cyanescens, a small, pale species with jet-black spores. That makes Blue Meanie a good first lesson in why scientific names matter, and the microscope settles the question, because cubensis spores are purple-brown. Our Blue Meanie guide explains the mix-up. The Blue Meanie spore syringe we sell is the cubensis strain.

3. Jedi Mind Fuck

Jedi Mind Fuck, usually shortened to JMF, has a disputed origin. The most repeated story says a cultivator known as “Myco Joe” found it in the wild in Georgia in the 2000s. A second story says it was a cross of Z-Strain and Golden Teacher. Neither account comes with dated records, and the writers who repeat them say so. The mushroom has a golden-brown cap with a pronounced cone-shaped bump at the center.

JMF also has a place in clinical research. In March 2025 the FDA cleared a trial at the Scottsdale Research Institute in Arizona, the first U.S. clinical trial to use whole mushrooms rather than synthetic psilocybin, and Jedi Mind Fuck is the strain the institute chose. Our JMF guide covers both origin stories, and the syringe is the Jedi Mind Fuck spore syringe.

4. Penis Envy

Penis Envy is the classic example of a mutant cubensis line. Its stem is thick and dense, and its small cap barely opens, staying close to the stem even at maturity. The best-supported history credits a cultivator named Rich Gee, who selected the line in the 1970s from spores that trace back to Terence McKenna’s collection in the Amazon.

Penis Envy also teaches a useful lesson about syringes. Because the cap stays mostly closed, the mushroom releases few spores, so a Penis Envy syringe holds fewer spores than a Golden Teacher syringe and can look thin. That is normal for this strain and is not a defect. See our Penis Envy guide or the Penis Envy spore syringe.

5. Leucistic A+

Leucistic A+ is the pale form of an older strain called A+, which hobbyist accounts tie to a spore seller known as Mr. G. It is sold almost everywhere as “Albino A+,” but it is not albino. Its caps and stems are cream to white, while its spores are pigmented purple to nearly black. That combination is what “leucistic” means: reduced pigment in the mushroom, with normal color in the spores.

This is why it belongs on a first list. It shows that a white mushroom does not mean white spores, and it gives you a pale strain whose spores are as easy to see on a slide as Golden Teacher’s. Our Leucistic A+ guide has the full history, and the syringe is the Leucistic A+ spore syringe.

The five strains side by side

Strain Reported origin What the mushroom looks like Spores Why it is on the list
Golden Teacher U.S., 1980s; usually said to be Florida Golden to amber cap, darker at the center Purple-brown The reference strain
Blue Meanie Australia, by community accounts Cubensis form that bruises blue quickly Purple-brown Shares its name with a different species
Jedi Mind Fuck Disputed; one story says Georgia, 2000s Golden-brown cap with a pronounced central bump Purple-brown The strain chosen for an FDA-cleared trial
Penis Envy U.S., 1970s, from Amazon-collected spores Thick stem, small cap that barely opens Purple-brown, but few of them The classic mutant form
Leucistic A+ A pale mutation of the A+ strain Cream to white cap and stem Purple to nearly black A pale mushroom with dark spores

Buying all five: the starter kit or a variety pack

You can buy each strain on its own for $19.99. If you want the whole set, there are two simpler options.

The Beginner’s Starter Kit contains exactly the five strains on this list: Golden Teacher, Blue Meanie, Jedi Mind Fuck, Penis Envy and Leucistic A+. Each syringe comes with a sterile needle and an alcohol pad, and the kit adds our Sanitary Kit, which is a pair of nitrile gloves, a surgical face mask and three alcohol pads.

The 5-Piece Variety Pack lets you pick any five strains yourself, and you can repeat a strain if you want more than one. It suits you if you want to swap a strain, for example B+ in place of one of ours. B+ is another long-standing catalog strain, and our B+ guide covers it. Our variety pack guide compares the larger packs. The 30-day warranty covers every syringe in both the kit and the pack.

Strains to save for later

Albino strains make a good second step once you know what ordinary cubensis spores look like. Their spores carry little or no pigment, so they are hard to find on a slide, and a syringe can look almost empty. Albino Penis Envy and Jack Frost are the best-known examples. Looking at them after Leucistic A+ shows the difference between a leucistic line and a truly albino one.

Newer strain names are worth collecting too, but many of them have little documented history, which makes them harder to learn from. Our list of the most popular cubensis strains of 2026 shows what other collectors are ordering. Before you start, our guides to what a spore syringe is and how long spore syringes last answer the most common first questions. Store syringes in the refrigerator, where they keep for up to 90 days.

Psilocybe cubensis spores contain no psilocybin or psilocin, so federal law does not treat them as a controlled substance, and the DEA confirmed that position in a January 2024 letter. Germinating them is illegal. We ship to 46 states and do not ship to California, Florida, Georgia or Idaho. You must be 18 or older to order. Laws change, so check the current law in your state; our state-by-state legal guide lists every state’s rules.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best spore syringes for beginners?

We recommend Golden Teacher, Blue Meanie, Jedi Mind Fuck, Penis Envy and Leucistic A+. Each has a documented history, a recognizable look and a common place in strain comparisons.

What does “beginner” mean for spore syringes?

It means someone new to spore microscopy or to collecting spore syringes. It does not refer to growing mushrooms, which we do not support or give instructions for.

Can you tell strains apart by their spores?

Usually not. Spores from pigmented cubensis strains look the same under a light microscope. The differences show up in the mushroom itself and, in some lines, in the amount or color of the spores.

Why does my Penis Envy syringe look thinner than my Golden Teacher syringe?

Penis Envy caps barely open, so the mushroom releases far fewer spores than most strains. A thinner-looking syringe is normal for this strain and does not mean anything is wrong with it.

Is Leucistic A+ the same as Albino A+?

Yes. It is sold under both names, but “leucistic” is the accurate one. The mushroom is pale, while its spores are pigmented purple to nearly black.

Does the Beginner’s Starter Kit include these five strains?

Yes. The Beginner’s Starter Kit contains Golden Teacher, Blue Meanie, Jedi Mind Fuck, Penis Envy and Leucistic A+ syringes, plus a Sanitary Kit with nitrile gloves, a face mask and alcohol pads.

Which states can you ship spore syringes to?

We ship to 46 states. We do not ship to California, Florida, Georgia or Idaho, and all buyers must be 18 or older.
